Hijab Hair Care

Ok so your hair is covered, does that mean you should neglect it and not give it some love and attention? No! Your hair is a blessing, love it and it will love you back 🙂

Suffering from dandruff or hair loss after hijab? The main culprits are lack of air circulation, humidity, tension, dryness and lack of love, yes love! Here’s how to get your healthy and great looking hair back:

Air and Blood Circulation:

  • Your hair wasn’t meant to be covered or pulled up all the time , it’s there to enjoy it. So whenever you can, let down your hair woman! Toss it around, flip it, let your hair breathe! Give it a good brushing daily, move your fingers between your locks, massage that scalp and get the blood pumping to those lovely follicles of yours!
  • When you do cover it, make sure you don’t tie your hair bonnet too tightly around your head to ensure air circulation to your scalp.
  • Unless you’re running a marathon, or caring for a toddler who loves to pull on your garments, you don’t need to secure the scarf around your head so tightly. Don’t worry, your scarf won’t fly off, wear it loosely in a way that guarantees coverage (use pins if needed) yet allows air circulation and prevents pulling tightly at your hair.
  • Also to avoid Hijab Hair (flat at the roots and lifeless hair) change the way you put up your hair under you scarf and where you part it often. That will help give it a nice bounce when you let it down.

Tension:

  • Don’t pull up and back your hair so tightly, wear it in a loose bun or braid to avoid breakage and tense hair that pops out of its roots! Also try using scrunchies or hair claws instead of elastic hair bands that tend to pull out a couple of hairs when you take them off, remember every hair counts!
  • Wear a cotton bonnet under your scarf to prevent breakage causing friction between your hair and scarf and wicks away sweat on a hot day keeping your hair dry.

Humidity:

  • Bacteria loves dark and humid places, so don’t make your head one of their favorite spots! WAIT until your hair air dries before you put it up in a pony tail, braid it or wear a scarf. Also, try sitting in the sun often (indoors at your sunniest window if you don’t have a discrete outdoor option) Not only will that discourage dandruff, but also great time to absorb all that precious vitamin D your scalp needs!

Dryness:

  • Our hair doesn’t need to be washed more than once a week, as that strips away its natural oils that seal in the moisture. Try washing it once a week, apply a deep conditioner then seal in that moisture with a dab of your favorite natural hair oil.
  • You can go a step further and change the way you wash your hair and go the “no-poo” way. Yasmine of Vegyptian swears by a simple salt and water rinse, followed by a dab of coconut oil.

Lifestyle:

  • Beauty starts from within is a cheesy but true statement. You have to love yourself enough to care for it. A diverse nutrient rich diet, exercise, enough sleep and stress free attitude do wonders to your health and appearance. It’s never too late to carve out time for yourself from that busy schedule of taking care of others. Love yourself and give it some ME time, it’s not just for beauty, it’s your moral obligation! We highly recommend “hijabi life coach and nutritionist” to get you on track with that feel good look good lifestyle 🙂

Salams Heba, they are blouses from my own wardrobe, I think they were from Promod. We are working now on designing our own EMMA Shirt. We would love to know what features you would like to see in a shirt, and what attracted you to these specific tops 🙂
